Tuoma farm < > Matti farm

In the Summer of 1770, in the era of Swedish rule of Finland, the farmer Per Persson (also written Pehr Pehrsson), his wife Clara Mickelsdotter (o.s.* Korteniemi), and their children of the Tuoma farm in Pello moved to Turtola by exchanging their farm with the farmer Henrik Esaiasson, his wife Valborg Matsdotter (o.s.* Kyrö), and their children of the Matti farm in Turtola.

*Fi o.s. = Fi omaa sukua = En "own family" meaning maiden name.

The Matti farm got its name from a farmer ancestor of Henrik Esaiasson by the first name of Matti who established this farm.  It is quite notable that the farm retained the given name Matti and -did not- acquire the name of Mattila as Matti + -la, meaning "Matti's place."

So, therefore, Pehr and Clara of the Tuoma farm in Pello became Pehr and Clara of the Matti farm in Turtola; Pehr and Clara Tuoma became Pehr and Clara Matti.

And, likewise, Henrik and Valborg of the Matti farm in Turtola became Henrik and Valborg of the Tuoma farm in Pello; Henrik and Valborg Matti became Henrik and Valborg Tuoma.

Amazingly, here in the US, descendants of Pehr and Clara Matti happen to know descendants of Henrik Esaiasson's father Esaias through his daughter Valborg, a sister of Henrik!
